About me

When a critical system goes down, the most expensive thing is not failing to know how to fix it: it's fixing it in a hurry and without judgement.

I've spent more than fifteen years doing the opposite: diagnosing with a cool head and solving problems without breaking anything along the way. I'm an IT and Telecommunications technician, and this is what's behind that.

I started at seven years old in front of a Commodore 64: I typed in the commands to get my games running myself — I was shown only once. That's where my journey through computing began. What followed was pure curiosity: FidoNet and the discovery that a computer could connect you to the world; afternoons with my father assembling machines and linking them through serial and parallel ports; my first programs.

Later came radio, and with it my passion for telecommunications: seeing how a complete transmission system is built, programmed and maintained hooked me to the point of enrolling in a higher vocational degree. And radio didn't replace computing: it expanded it. I've never stopped seeing a computer as a blank canvas where you can build whatever is needed.

The way I work is best understood through a real example: a critical server goes down while I'm on holiday, with pressure to fix it right away. I diagnosed the problem (a poorly assembled RAID and a deteriorated port), confirmed the data was safe, and refused to touch the hardware without a verified backup. I was called an alarmist; in the end I was right. That's my hallmark: a cool head and sound judgement when things go wrong. And robust solutions with free software and scarce resources — because inexpensive, done right, works too.

As for my skills, I administer systems and networks (VPN, RADIUS, Ubiquiti), I build and maintain databases (SQL Server, MySQL) and I program whatever's missing with Python, SQL, PHP, JavaScript or C# — and, if a project calls for it, I expand the repertoire. On top of all this: more than fifteen years of experience, GDPR certification and C1 English.

My first project, quite some time ago, was a management system that helped a site obtain its ISO 9001 certification; the latest is this very website. (There's more in my projects.)

I take on responsibility and tell the truth even when it's uncomfortable. I teach those who know less so they don't depend on me, instead of making myself indispensable. And I make a point of understanding other people's work so I can help without getting in the way. Because I believe in one idea above all: technology is here to help people, not to replace them.

I'm drawn to projects with impact — the ones that make people's work easier without overriding their effort.

Aitiden Radio

2008–2010 · Personal project (co-founder)

I co-founded a non-commercial FM radio station and ran its entire technical infrastructure: the audio chain (mixing consoles, players, telephone hybrids and audio recorders) and a 24/7 automated broadcasting system with recording and archive, built on computers I refurbished from discarded IT equipment. The link between broadcasting points was solved through low-latency ADSL streaming, avoiding the licence and annual fees of radio links. It stayed on air continuously for almost four years.

ACPAME — Goods Yard Access Management

2005–2006 · Large retail store (Tenerife)

My first project, born from the inside: while working in access control I saw that goods reception was coordinated by phone and on paper forms that didn't even stay in the guard booth — no notice board, no shared records. I designed and implemented a Microsoft Access database with an interface served through an embedded web server, allowing simultaneous access from the three reception desks, and hardened it with VBA to prevent improper manipulation. Phone calls gave way to direct system queries: real-time information, centralised notices and incidents, and a searchable history. The system contributed to the site obtaining its ISO 9001 certification.

Wi-Fi network with authentication and expiring credentials

2017 · University student residence

The residence provided internet access through a single shared WPA2 password that students passed around — to the point that outsiders ended up connecting — and there was no way to revoke access when a resident finished the academic year. I implemented a RADIUS authentication server on Linux that replaced the shared password with individual credentials, featuring per-user expiry dates — renewable by the administration simply by adjusting the start and end dates according to each resident's application — and a limit of two concurrent connections per account (phone and computer). I packaged the system as a reproducible OVA image so it could be imported, replicated and backed up. I also collaborated in configuring the Ubiquiti access points providing coverage.

In-store music and digital signage system

2023 · Hardware store chain (Tenerife)

I replaced the store's makeshift ambience setup — an FM radio that slipped in competitors' adverts, and TVs that sat switched off or fed from USB sticks — with an in-house solution running on a repurposed computer and free software licensed for commercial use. I orchestrated the background music, opening and closing announcements and in-house adverts with ZaraRadio, reusing music the company already held rights to. Videos for the screens were served over the network through Windows' DLNA service, organised by store section for instant lookup, and the same programming was rebroadcast to a second store in another municipality via BUTT and Caster.fm, avoiding paying twice for the same service. The whole setup, remotely manageable, covered 4 screens across 2 stores with zero licensing costs.

2026 · Personal project

Design and development of this very site: a bilingual (Spanish and English) portfolio and blog built from scratch with Jekyll, no framework. Its architecture presents three professional profiles — technical, administrative and teaching — on a single foundation, fully differentiated through CSS palette and typography tokens, with light and dark themes that respect system preferences. Accessibility is a core pillar: it meets WCAG 2.2 AA guidelines, with legible self-hosted fonts, keyboard navigation and theme-flash prevention. Content is managed through YAML data and reusable templates, with version control in Git.
